Old friend, you are getting annoying I’ve been using a Synology DS216+II since, well… 2016. It still serves me well, I’ve just upgraded its storage capacity the third time, now to 8TB, but it’s clear that it’s getting slow with the current workload I’m putting on it.
Currently it has to serve around 30 docker containers beside its standard NAS functions. I find that the 8 GB of RAM I put inside it around 2017 helped a lot and the bottleneck are the HDDs.

Picking a media player

I’ve been using some iteration of Kodi for a long time on different devices, most recently on a Raspberry Pi 4. (Un)fortunately, sometimes I get the urge to try something new and if I can consolidate the number of devices I use I’m all the more for it.
I have a Samsung smart TV and generally I’m pleased with the speed of it so it was a no brainer to pick a media player that has a native app I can run on the TV itself.

Running Pi-Hole on a Mikrotik router in Docker

My router history As I mentioned earlier, I have a Mikrotik hAP ac3 router. I always liked fine-tuning my routers, the previous one was a TP-Link device with OpenWRT installed on it. I bought the Mikrotik router after much deliberation since I was sure that I have the adequate level of networking knowledge to comfortably play with OpenWRT, RouterOS is a different kind of animal. Oh boy, was I not wrong!

TIL #3 - Nginx docker container rewrite rules

Let’s look a little bit under the hood I chose Hugo to generate the page since I always wanted to try out one of these fancy site builder thingies. The config seemed pretty straightforward and I was up and running fairly quickly. I played around some with the Minimal Bootstrap Hugo Theme but was not satisfied with it so I changed to the Cactus theme. The change was not a huge deal, the site was up and running I clicked through it, saw that everything was working, pats on shoulders all around.

TIL #2 - Configuring Offen docker volume backup

Backup revisited In my previous post about container backup I planned to come up with a proper volume backup solution for my home environment.
After playing around with various settings and configuration of Offen I decided that I’ll use a dedicated container for each volume I want to back up. I ended up putting the necessary config in a single docker-compose.yml file.
This may be redundant and I’m sure there are better ways to do it, but it works for me.

TIL #1 - Using volumes in docker for backup (and other) purposes

A little history I’ve been using docker on my Synology NAS for over two years now. The process of moving to containers was a slow one at the beginning but after I learned a lot about the inner workings of docker and the limitations Synology has in its implementation (not too problematic and can be solved) it was a game changer for me.
So, I started off by using Synology’s own implemantetion for the docker GUI which is quite useful for someone with no prior knowledge of the topic but after a while I wanted more control, flexibiliy, possibilities, etc.
